Dark stoneware cup of evening valerian tea

Valerian Deep

The serious night cup. Earthy, quiet, strong.

Valerian root is not a pretty tea. It smells like deep soil and old wood. Paired with hops and a little chamomile, it is the cup you make only when you mean to sleep.

Ingredients

1 cup

  • Organic valerian root1 tsp
  • Organic hops flowers½ tsp
  • Organic chamomile1 tsp

Method

  1. 1

Steep covered 10 minutes. The smell is part of the plant — it mellows in the cup.

  2. 2

Honey helps. Drink 30–45 minutes before bed.

  3. 3

Do not chase it with screens.

Why this cup

  • A traditional night-time root, not a daytime sipper
  • Best as a short course, not an all-year habit
  • The ritual itself — dim light, one cup — matters

Go gently

  • Can cause morning grogginess. Do not drive after a strong cup.
  • Not for use with alcohol or other sedatives.
  • Skip in pregnancy and for children. Some people feel restless instead of sleepy — stop if that is you.
