Lemon oil

Citrus limon

Bright citrus for a sink spray and a diffuser. Phototoxic on skin.

Cold-pressed lemon oil smells like the peel, not the juice. It is excellent in a kitchen spray and a poor idea on skin that will see sun. Use the fruit for food; use the oil for scent and shine.

Traditional uses

  • A citrus kitchen spray with vinegar and water
  • A drop on a damp cloth to wipe a greasy hob
  • Diffused for a short, bright session

How to prepare

  1. 1

Spray: 150 ml water, 50 ml white vinegar, 12 drops lemon oil. Shake.

  2. 2

Do not use on granite or natural stone.

  3. 3

If it meets skin, wash it off before you go outdoors.

Kitchen & home

  • The oil oxidizes — buy small, recap, and replace when it smells flat.
  • A drop in a simmer pot with actual lemon peel is redundant; pick one.
  • Keep it off polished wood if you have not tested a corner.

Go gently

  • Do not ingest the essential oil.
  • Phototoxic: diluted or not, citrus peel oils can burn skin in sunlight.
  • Can irritate. Dilute. Keep off pets’ fur.
